I love experimenting with toy cameras when photographing personal projects. I am fascinated by the architectural characteristics that make each neighborhood distinguishable in New York City. The color images below were captured on the world’s smallest 35mm camera and the black & white images were captured on my Holga. Love both of these plastic, rudimentary cameras. These images were taken in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn.
I had the amazing opportunity to second shoot this wedding for Scott of Scott Andrew Studios, an extremely talented film photographer from the San Fran/Napa area of California. I absolutely love second shooting whenever I get a chance. It’s hard during the spring, summer and fall when I’m so busy with my own weddings, but in the winter, I always try to shoot a few with my photographer friends! I loved this elegant winter wedding at Studio 450, a super chic venue in Chelsea. This space was absolutely stunning! Here are a few of my favorite details from the day. A couple frames from Long Island City, Queens… I captured these on the smallest 35mm camera in the world. I love this little camera, roughly the size of my iPhone, because it’s convenient to carry around. Not only that, but it captures images on half of a 35mm film negatvive- basically on a 36 exposure roll I get 72 half sized images. Love these tiny, mini frames. I have been sifting through some of my personal film images from 2011 and came across these two images that I had previously overlooked. I especially love the shot of the elevated train. When I’m in NYC one of my favorite activities is wandering aimlessly along the city streets. The nooks and neighborhoods in New York are endless and I love every square inch. For those who are curious, I am currently in Minneapolis, but still traveling back and forth, booking weddings in both Minneapolis and the the New York area. I am really excited about all the amazing couples I will get to work with this year from the East Cost to the Midwest to Mexico and a few stops in between! I am still booking select dates in 2012 and would love to chat with you if you are planning your wedding for this year! :)
Back to New York. I spent 6 months of 2011 living and working in the city, and in the in between time I focused on documenting the diverse cultural neighborhoods, which I’m planning on presenting in a mini-series on the blog every Friday! Stay tuned. (And, keep me accountable my harassing me with phone calls and emails if I fail to post!)

Katie & Steve, where do I even begin!? This couple came into my life in such a unexpected and random way. Back in 2010, I decided to offer a wedding giveaway for 2011. I received so many amazing entries from deserving couples and Katie’s was the last I received. I don’t recall how Katie found me, but her and Steve’s story immediately touched my heart. You can read their story in this blog post by scrolling down a bit to their entry. The finalists were chosen by a select group of my industry peers before the winner was chosen through a poll on my blog. Katie and Steve ending up winning the giveaway with over 2,000 votes!! The outpouring of love and support from their friends and family was amazing!
So, it was no surprise that my lovely assistant, Garrett, and I were welcomed to this wedding with a touch of all the love! Katie and Steve and their families were beyond welcoming and so appreciative and thankful. This experience was an amazing way to wrap up the 2011 season. This season spanned half the year in New York, half in Minneapolis, dozens of states in between, a new continent (Africa), adventures in teaching/driving stick with Whitney, windshield wipers breaking in the middle of the night during a downpour, braving the I-95, eating ice cream in Mystic, and tons of other adventures and misadventures. Most importantly, I was welcomed into the lives of some very special clients. Katie and Steve definitely fit the bill and experiencing and documenting their wedding day was truly an honor.
K&S were married at All Souls on the Upper East Side before heading to ReBar in DUMBO to eat, drink and celebrate! The dance was unbelievable. Long after we had finished shooting, I literally had to tear Garrett away! :)
A special thanks to Garrett for coming all the way from the land of 10,000 lakes to NYC to shoot this wedding with me. And, a big, big thanks to Stacie of Stacie Shea Events who did an amazing job coordinating the whole affair! Ms. Stacie also has roots in the great state of Minnesota- what a small world! :)
Katie’s mother handmade all the gorgeous bouquets and bouts. They were just stunning!!
